Gopal S. Adivrekar is an abstract painter who has raised the bar for non-figurative art. His paintings are vibrant works of art that stand out.
Adivrekar moved to Mumbai after being born in a little Konkani hamlet in 1938. He enrolled at the Sir J. J. School of Art and graduated in 1963. He afterwards started an illustrious career as an abstract artist. Adivrekar has a long history of affiliation with the Lalit Kala Academi. He also held the position of Chairman of the Bombay Art Society for a few years and worked as an art designer for the Weavers Service Center. As an artist and an organizer, he has had a dual impact on the art world.
The canvases created by Adivrekar are pure color poetry and bear the unmistakable genius fingerprint. The lovely coastal region from which Adivrekar comes originally from is reminiscent of the blue of the sea, the white of the surf, clouds, birds, golden sands, and dark rock that gleams in the sunlight. He has taken all of these and turned them into symbolic, non-naturalistic abstract art forms. His paintings are a visual feast and a beautifully balanced work of art because of the strong imagery and gorgeous color blending.
The death of Gopal Adivrekar occurred in September 2008.
